Reporting unfit drivers

A study of more than 1,600 Canadian drivers who had been injured in traffic crashes showed that 37% had physical conditions that could have affected their ability to drive.

In 7 of Canada's 10 provinces doctors are legally obliged to report such conditions to transportation authorities. However, researchers conducting the study found that most were not actually doing it. Only 3% of the injured drivers were actually reported.

"One-third of drivers involved in serious crashes were suffering from a chronic medical condition that contributed to the crashes," according to Donald Redelmeier, a senior scientist with the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences in Toronto and one of the researchers who conducted the study.

"The extent of this under-reporting is really remarkable, Dr. Redelmeier said. Almost all of the crash-injured drivers had seen a doctor in the previous year but almost none of the driver-impairing conditions had been reported.

Gonca,

exaggerate everything that you do elsceiaply when you look on your shoulders and on the side and rear view mirrors. you have to turn your head as much as possible to let them know that you're checking before you change lane or turn. be polite and don't argue with the one who gives you the test. good luck.

Jonathan,

Only 3% actually reported..... that says it all! What a sad state of affairs.
