Mazda North American will scrap all 4,703 vehicles that were aboard the freighter Cougar Ace when it foundered at sea this year.
The ship went into a 60-degree list on its run across the Pacific last July when its ballast was displaced. Some of the cars went under water but many were held in their mounts and kept dry.
Some potential buyers thought they had the prospect of a cheap used car, but Mazda said they could not take the chance of issues with damage arising down the road. As a result, 2,475 Mazda 3 sedans, 329 Mazda 3 five-doors, 56 Mazda 5 minivans, 1,329 CX-7 crossovers, 214 RX-8 sports cars, 5 MazdaSpeed 6 sedans and 295 MX-5 Miata convertibles are going to the scrap heap.

jannet,
hi know where you can get it back
Vaun,
I seriously need a car If they can't figure out what to do with them I would gladly volunteer to take one off their hands.
Buy a Katrina car,
A flooded car, especially one that was submerged in salt water, will never be the same and will die prematurely.
Even if Mazda sold them cheaply with full disclosure and a waiver requirement, many would almost certainly have their titles "laundered" by buyers like cars flooded in Hurricane Katrina, and resold for a profit without the waivers or disclosure. Then when the cars start falling apart in short order, it's really bad PR and possibly legal trouble for Mazda.
Mazda did the right thing for themselves and for the possible future owners of the damaged vehicles.
Mad A.T. Mazda,
This is par for the course with an automobile company that has mysteriously abondoned the north american continent. How many cars did Mazda sell in the USA in 1990? How many last year? About the same. Why?
Adithya.Guduru,
Hey guys this type of press releases are fully fault .This is one tupe of tactics b'cause they sell in real market and gain money but they says we are not selling....never beleive this type of press releases..
maccadoo,
what about putting them on e bay as water damaged
Reinhart,
If the cars are a liability, then Ford Motor Company, parent of Mazda, are obligated to make the most prudent decision.
Sure, it's a pity. But, it's also the right thing to do. Better to scrap the cars than even remotely risk jeopardizing HUMAN LIVES with these vehicles. A life is more of a pity to waste than a mere car. Besides, Ford can't even attempt to fight off the liability of these products like it tried to do in regards to the Pinto fiasco; it would be an almost certain loss to Ford in terms of litigation should an accident or even a lemon-law issue arise with these cars.
As for what happens to them when they are scrapped, they are likely going to be RECYCLED. That is, the materials will be broken down and REUSED to make new vehicles, instead of these materials being disposed of outright. Recycling the materials will cost less as well since Ford isn't going out and just buying new raw materials to build new vehicles.
The "weekend environmentalists," as I would like to call them, who are throwing a fit about this should really take the effort to understand how it actually works out. Those vehicles that get crushed in the junkyards and so, there are processes that are employed which separate materials for recycling them for making new products in an effort to preserve natural resources and reduce pollution. How many people who claim to be concerned about the environment and complain about THIS is beyond belief.
Faraz Khan,
Hay Hay dont scarp these cars plz give me one RX-8.
Stephen,
Thats Bloody Crazy! I want 1 too!
Big Bob,
The ship line also has insurance for this type of accident Mazda already got there money for the cars no loss to them in order to make certain they get there money they cant keep the cars not matter what
dave,
what r they smoking, give them to me lol
Reality?,
From an accounting point of view, they have to "scrap" them in order to write them off as a total loss.
They would be guilty of fraud if they claim a loss on paper, and these cars show up on the market.
me,
I AGREE WITH ,
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING.
You gotta be kidding,
Guys, you are all seriously naive! The liability risk that Mazda could face if they did anything with these cars other than crush them would be in the billions.
To "don't be so sure", scrap heap means the scrap heap. Very rarely can the parts from a built vehicle be sold. Distributors wouldn't buy them because they know that their retailers will look at them like they are stupid. The only way that Mazda could get any money from the parts would be to sell them on the black market.
To "greeny", as far as the environmental impact of this goes, it is an absolute shame. It is not stupid though. A company cannot risk their existence to save a little environmental waste. That's like telling a toy company that they are bad for recalling a defective toy because a few of them might have a part that could break off and choke a child. Since this was a major news maker, you can be sure that the company is going to do everything they can to make this have as little an impact on the environtment as possible. More than likely, everything possible on the vehicles will be recycled.
As far as signing a waiver, there is not a waiver under any major country's law that would completely eliminate their liability. Even if they did have buyers/donees sign a waiver, any lawyer worth his/her salt would be able to get a judge to side with the victim of a serious accident, injury, or death caused by one of those vehicles.
I for one am actually proud of what Mazda decided to do. It shows a company that is more concerned about their customers than their bottom line. It shows me that they are willing to take the hit to keep their customers safe.
Sorry for being the only one that can see it from their perspective.
Martin Haywood,
Buy a European car, thats a good place for them to finish up, think of the parts that it will save you, that you would have put into them, long-term
vaughn,
as bad i need a car i would sign a waver if needed
greeny,
Silly. Just because a corporation makes the most of something, does not mean it will make environmentally friendlier choices.
Give yourself a hug. You are probably lonely in your anti-tree hugging little world.
don't be so sure,
The cars "are going to the scrap heap" doesn't mean they are going to a crusher. Certainly 4000 brand new cars will be utilized in some fashion. Salvage cars don't have to be junk. You guys sound a little naive. Especially the tree hugger.... Environmental stupidity? Stupid is thinking a corporation will not make the most of the losses. You need a hug, I'm sure.
fire400,
at least make this e-waste and send it to another country that can use these! terrible economic planning...
dipstick,
man, im a mazda lover and hearing this almost makes me want to cry. i'd buy one or just take it off thier hands free for them, or a least a rx8 fuel pump
bus615,
The least that they could do is use the cars for scrap or used parts as long as they they check and certify them thats is so tipical of corparations who throw money out like that and then hit the comsumer with the lost later
greeny,
Also an environmental stupidity, on top of the disaster of the ship in the first place.
jono,
Thats Bloody Crazy! I want 1!
