The U.S. White House was the scene of a display of alternative-fuel vehicles this week as President Bush looked over Ford, Chevrolet, and Chrysler hybrids parked in the South driveway. According to GlobalAutoNet, the display was part of Bush's promotion of fuel cell development and intended to further his aim of getting his energy legislation passed by the Senate. One of the tenets of his plan is drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With even the National Council of Churches weighing in against it and calling for "safer, more sustainable strategies," Bush is also pressing for tax credits amounting to some $3 billion for buyers of fuel-cell-powered and other hybrid vehicles in the coming decade. Bush vociferously opposed similar tax credits championed by Al Gore during the late presidential campaign. Nevertheless, Bush said, "There is a role for the federal government, not only to encourage research and development, but to provide tax credits to enhance the marketplace." He expressed hope that alternative-fuel vehicles will be widely available to consumers soon.
