Cameras and microphones in Aussie taxis questioned

Saying privacy issues have not been fully resolved, Victoria's Privacy Commissioner has questioned State Government decisions to implement new security measures in taxis. Recent attacks against drivers, some resulting in death, have sped up the proposal. Images and recordings would be stored for about two days in an armoured box hidden in the taxi. Drivers would not have access to the box. Passengers will be informed of the device through stickers on the outer doors and inside of the taxi, which state that hiring the taxi implies consent to being filmed. Photos are taken by several means, including opening or closing doors, starting and stopping the meter, and pushing the brake pedal or an emergency button. According to the article in The Age , attacks against drivers had dropped 60 per cent since cameras were installed in 1997 in Western Australia.
