Video resources

Date: Monday, 30. April 2007

This article was originally part of PDE's "Guide to Resources," which was published in 1994. We are in the process of updating it. If you have a favorite video that is not here, or have other comments, please email us.

This article started out as an attempt to develop a "top 20" list of videos, but that turned out to be impractical. The information was difficult to get and video catalogues tended to have many titles that were very out of date.

The best alternative seemed to be to ask a cross-section of driver educators from across the U.S. and Canada what videos they use and which ones they would recommend. The results are summarized below.

However, it quickly became obvious that, for the most part, driver educators haven't been buying many new videos. Most of those recommended were more than five years old, and many were more than ten. Money for new purchases has been scarce and there haven't been many new videos available until recently.

The survey turned into two listings: 10 videos widely used in the U.S., and 10 widely used in Canada. A separate listing for Canada is included because there are some good Canadian videos available that seem to be little known in the U.S. There were a total of 27 respondents to the survey, which was quite informal, so not too much significance should be given to the selection. It was just a way to get a measure of what's out there.

More importantly, a listing of videos produced since 1990 will give readers an idea of what new offerings are available.
