Drivers may soon have a dashboard assistant that provides advice on how to save fuel throughout a trip. Dutch and Swedish researchers have tested a prototype that demonstrated that drivers who followed the computer's advice on acceleration, braking, and other driving tactics could reduce gasoline consumption by as much as 20 percent. The device constantly monitors several of the vehicle's characteristics, as well as distance to cars ahead on the roadway. According to the article in the New York Times , one common flaw that drivers in standard transmission cars make is to delay shifting too long. And anticipating the need to brake will also help save both fuel and wear on the brakes.
