Whether you're relocating or buying a car from a distance on eBay or craigslist, transporting a vehicle can seem daunting. Most people are unfamiliar with the process so may not know where to turn for answers, how much it should cost, and what to look for in a transporter. Here are a few helpful tips you should consider the next time you need to ship a car.
You should provide a complete and accurate description of the vehicle. Let them know if it's been altered - such as adding new tires or being lowered - and if it's in good working order or not. A vehicle that isn't running can be transported, but they need to know ahead of time.
First, before the inspection process give your car a good wash. That way you can see any scratches or dents ahead of time. Make sure the inspection is done in a well-lit area and ensure it is as thorough as possible. As soon as the bill of landing is signed, you will have a more difficult time making a claim if you find damage later.
This is something that may seem like a good idea, giving you extra space, but should actually be avoided. Your transporter is likely not licensed to transport household goods and filling your car full of these items can even be unsafe. Items in your vehicle can become dislodged and potentially even come out of the vehicle during transport. Additionally, your transporter will be in and out of your car during the loading and unloading process, so they would need access and your belongings may get in the way of this.
This is something that will be discussed with your transporter ahead of time and should be worked into the final price. You will likely get a different quote for a door-to-door shipment (straight to your home) than you would a terminal-to-terminal shipment (to another pickup location). If your house is in a difficult location, such as a narrow residential street, you'll need to tell your transporter ahead of time. The last thing you want is a loading or unloading day where your transporter isn't able to reach the vehicle.
Be sure you give your transporter good, working contact information. Especially if you're moving somewhere new, give your transporter your cell phone so that you can be in contact if anything comes up. Lack of communication is the primary cause of delays, so enabling your carrier to get in touch with you will make sure everything runs smoothly.
