The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has just released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by states.
Overall traffic was down by 4.4 percent (that's 10.7 billion less vehicle miles!) in September 2008 as compared with September 2007. Cumulative travel for 2008 was down by 3.5 percent (-79.2 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 2,177.0 billion vehicle miles of travel.
Least affected were the Northeastern states (down 3.4%). Worst were the south Atlantic states (Virginia down to Florida), which were down 5.7%. Next worst were the south gulf states which were down 5.2%.
