Solution One – Check whether the WiFi option is On
Laptops have function keys to turn Wi-Fi on and off. The key is generally labeled with a wireless symbol like the one shown below.
The option to switch on the WiFi differs with each laptop make and model. Kindly refer the laptop documentation to know the exact method to turn on the WiFi. If you cannot find any function key to turn on the WiFi, follow the steps given below to turn on the WiFi
For Windows 10 users
- Type wifi in the Cortana search box and then click Change WiFi settings from the list of results
- Check whether the WiFi status is ON. if the Wi-Fi status is Off, click the Wi-Fi toggle switch to turn it on.
- Try connecting to any available WiFi network. if you are still not able to connect, try next solution
For Windows 7 users
- Click Start
- Type network in Start search box
- Click Network and Sharing Center from the list of results
- Click Change Adapter Settings
- Right-click on your wireless network adapter and click
- Try connecting to wireless network. if you still see the Wireless network icon disabled, try next solution
Solution Two – Check power management setting of your wireless network adapter
Windows operating system has several settings that are designed to save power. the power management feature allows Windows to power down devices that are not in use. There is a possibility the power management settings are the cause of the Wi-Fi problem. Here are the steps you need to follow to resolve the issue.
- Press Windows logo key and R simultaneously on the keyboard to invoke Run command console.
- In the Run command box, type devmgmt.msc and click OK
- In the Device Manager window, click on Network adapters category to expand it
- Right-click the wireless adapter and click Properties
- In the Properties window, go to Power Management tab and uncheck the option -Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK
- Close all windows and try connecting to wireless network. if you are still unable to connect to wireless network, try next solution.
Solution Three – Update Wireless Network Driver through Device Manager
- Open Device Manager(refer to the steps given above)
- Go to Network adapters category and expand it
- Right-click Wireless adapter in the list and click Update driver software
- In the next window, click Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Wait for some time until Windows search for wireless network driver update.
- Many times the Windows shows the message – The best driver software for your device is already installed.
In this case, you need to use other methods to update Wireless adapter driver. You can either go to the laptop manufacturer website to download latest wireless adapter driver or use a driver update utility to update wireless adapter driver automatically.
