No sound issue is a common problem that many Windows 10 users face.
We have shared some solutions that are easy to implement and should fix this issue for you. You can start with the first solution and work your way down until the problem gets fixed.
Solution 1 – Check your cables
Are you unable to hear any voice coming out of an external audio device, like speakers? If yes, first check if the cable is in good condition.
A broken cable can cause this problem, and an easy way to check whether your cable is in working condition is to plug it into another computer and check how it works.
If the external audio device works fine when used with another machine, you can assume the problem is not with the speaker or similarnaudio output device.
Also, don’t forget to check whether the sound has been muted or not. It is possible that you or someone else might have muted the sound by mistake.
Solution 2 – Check the speaker settings
Here are the steps to follow:
- Right-click sound icon in the system tray (present on the bottom right corner) and then select Playback devices
- Make sure that you see a green tick-mark on Speakers under Playback, which shows your speakers are set as default playback device
- If that’s not the case, there’s a good chance that this is the root cause of the no sound issue. To fix the problem, click Speakers and then click the Set Default button (as shown below). Finally click the OK button
- In case the Speakers are set as the default playback device, but you still are getting no sound, you might want to try out different sound formats. Simply click Speakers and then click the Properties button
- Now click the Advanced tab and then click the drop-down menu under Default Format and choose a different sample rate as well as bit depth. Now click the Test button. You should repeat this till you are able to locate a format which works fine. When you do, simply click the OK button.
In case you none of the given formats work, go to the next solution.
Solution 3 – Uninstall the audio driver
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupt, missing, or outdated sound driver. In such a case, updating the sound driver often fixes the issue.
You can update the sound driver manually or automatically. The second method is more convenient, not to mention faster and more accurate. Nevertheless, we have given the steps for both manual and automatic methods. You can pick the one that suits you best.
Updating sound driver manually
Here are the steps to follow:
- Press Windows logo key + R together to bring up the Run command
- In Run command, type devmgmt.msc and click OK
- In the Device Manager, go to Sound, video, and game controllers category and expand it
- Right click the sound card and click the Uninstall button your mouse and right-click on it
- You might get a message asking you to confirm your action. If so, click the OK button
- Reboot Windows and check if the issue is resolved
In case the issue persists, it might mean that Windows doesn’t have the correct driver. In that case, you can manually download and install the driver.
Here are the steps to follow:
- Press Windows logo key + R together to bring up the Run command
- In Run command, type devmgmt.msc and click OK

- Note down the details of your sound card
