Sometimes when you try resetting Windows 10 to its default state, you get the following error – There was a problem resetting your PC.
However, there’s nothing to worry about. This error is easy to resolve, and we’ll show you how.
Typically, this error appears in any of the following situations:
- You have pre-installed Windows 10
- Your PC manufacturer had enabled compression so that the disk space needed to preinstall applications reduces
- You have created a recovery drive (USB) with the help of “Create a recovery drive” feature
- You booted your Windows 10 PC to USB recovery drive and then selected Troubleshoot>Reset this PC>Remove everything
You can choose either of the following methods to fix the problem. However, first close the error-notification window by clicking the Close icon.
Solution 1 – Check the system file
Here are the steps to follow:
- Click the Power button in the Start menu. Next hold Shift key and click Restart
- Now click Troubleshoot
- Choose Advanced options and then click Command Prompt
- Choose the administrator account and now type in the password for it, if you have set one up. Now click Continue
- Once Command Prompt comes up, type these commands and press the Enter key after typing each one of them
cd %windir%\system32\config
ren system system.001
ren software
software.001
- After executing these commands, click the Continue option in the boot option page
- Reset Windows 10 once again and check if the issue is fixed
Solution 2 – Recover PC from a USB recovery Drive
Here are the steps to follow:
- You will need an empty USB to complete these steps. Insert such a USB into your PC. We recommend you to get hold of a USB with 16 GB of space
- In the Start Search box of Windows Start menu, type recovery drive
- In the start search results, click Create a recovery drive
- In case a User Account Control dialog box shows up, click the Yes option
- Click the Next button. We recommend you select the checkbox before Back up system files to the recovery drive to ensure your data is backed up.
- Now select the correct USB drive. Click the Next button
- Click the Create button
- Click the Finish button once the recovery drive is created
- Restart Windows and press F12 key to enter the boot option page (If this key is a different one on your PC, press that)
- Click the Recover from a drive option
- Follow the onscreen instructions
