Windows 8 is a huge improvement over Windows 7. With that said, some things were better in the older version, such as an option for delaying installation of updates.
Disappointingly, no such feature is present in Windows 8. In the new operating system, although users are informed about the upcoming updates in advance, they cannot delay the installation with the default update settings switched on. This can be annoying, especially when you are in middle of something important.
To turn off automatic updates, perform these steps:
- Open the Charms Bar, and then click Settings
- Click Control Panel
- Browse to System and Security, and then select ‘turn off automatic updating on or off”
- Select “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them” from the drop-down menu below Important Updates
- Click OK to save the changes
This will turn off the automatic updating of Windows updates in Windows 8.
While errors caused by registry-related issues have reduced in the newer Windows versions, they have not completely stopped. What was true for the older versions remains good for newer versions as well: maintaining a clean and compact registry is the best and surest way of preventing registry errors. And how can you maintain a clean and compact registry? Simple, run registry scans regularly using a robust registry maintenance software tool.

I would like to prevent automatic updates to my windows 8 laptop but I don’t have a administrator’s account so the update settings are blocked. I need to stop these updates because when I need to use the computer, I have to wait 30 minutes for all the updates to configure. Help!
