A command run utility, check disk, or chkdsk, checks the health of a hard disk and, if necessary, recovers and repairs data stored on the drive.
Check disk also identifies any malfunctioning or damaged sectors on your hard drive and recovers any data still intact.
Command Syntax
chkdsk (name of the drive:) (/p) (r)
drive: = The drive letter of the partition that you want to check for errors
/p = When you select this option, the selected drive is extensively checked and errors are corrected.
/r = When you select this option, bad sectors are located and any readable data is recovered
Note: when you use the latter option, you don’t have to use the first option with it as it is implied.
Run Check Disk
You can run chkdsk at the command prompt. Alternately, you can run it from My Computer window. To do the latter, perform the following steps:
- Open My Computer
- Right-click the drive you want to check, and select Properties
- Select Tools
- Click the Check now button under Error-checking
- In the Check disk options dialog box, select either one of the two options or both of them, and then click Start.
If, for some reasons, your hard drive crashes, you can recover your data with help of a reliable and fast data recovery tool.
