Minecraft is one of the most popular games, but it is far from perfect. Despite Mojang Studios (Minecraft’s developers) best efforts, it’s not uncommon to encounter an error now and then while playing the game or at startup.

Sometimes Minecraft crashes with the “Exit 1” error, but fortunately the issue is easily resolvable. In this post, we have shared 5 most probable solutions to the Minecraft Exit Code 1 error. You don’t have to try all the solutions. Start from the first one and work your way down until the problem is fixed.

Solution 1 – Use the right mod version

If the Minecraft version that is installed on your system is not the same as the mod version, the Exit 1 error could occur. It’s important that all your mods are of the same version as the game you’re playing.

For instance, if the Minecraft version installed on your Windows computer is 1.20.6 while the mod version is 1.19.4, you may encounter the error. If this is the reason, manually update the mod to the latest version.

Before you update the mod version, check the Minecraft version. Here’s how:

• Open Minecraft
• Click Installation
• You’ll see the Minecraft version in the Latest Release section

Next, perform these steps:

• Press Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box
• Type %appdata%
• Click the OK button

• Go to Minecraft>Mods in the Roaming folder

• Check the version number of all the mods in the mods folder

Note: Go to the next solution in the list if all the mods are of the same version as the Minecraft installed on your Windows computer.

If a mod doesn’t have the same version number as the Minecraft game you have, replace it with the correct version. To do this, complete these steps:

• Write down the name of the faulty mod
• Open a web browser and navigate to CurseForge website
• In the search field, type the faulty mod’s name and press Enter
• Select the right mod in the search results
• Switch to Files tab to see all available versions of this mod. Select the version that matches the version of Minecraft you’re playing
• Click Download
• Next, replace the fault mod with the newer version
• Restart Windows and launch Minecraft’s

If the error persists, try the next solution.

Solution #2 – Update GPU drivers

Outdated GPU driver(s) can cause Exit Code 1 error. Therefore, it’s worth checking if you have the latest driver for your graphics card model, and if not, download and install the latest graphics driver.

To check the graphics card model and graphics driver version, follow the steps below. You’ll need this information to locate the right driver on the manufacturer’s website.

• Type devmgmt.msc in the Search bar in the taskbar and hit Enter

• In the Device Manager window, locate and expand Display adapters by clicking the arrow before it
• You’ll see the graphics card model installed on your computer; note down this information

• Right-click the graphics card and select Properties

• Click the Driver tab and note down the driver version

• Exit Device Manager

Next, go to the manufacturer’s website and search for the latest driver for your graphics model. Check if latest driver version available is the same as the one installed on your computer. If not, download it and save the driver file on the desktop or some other location.

Once the download is complete, double-click the .exe file to launch installation. Wait for installation to complete and restart Windows.

Solution #3 – Change Java Runtime Executable path

Java is needed to run the game. Java Runtime Executable, or JRE for short, is automatically installed on your computer when you install Minecraft.

In case Java malfunctions, it could trigger Exit Code 1 error. What’s the solution? First, check if the Java Runtime Executable path is viable. To do so, perform these steps:

• Open Minecraft Launcher
• Go to its Java version
• Click installation
• Locate the Latest Release profile, click the three-dot menu, and select Edit
• Use the Options drop down menu (in the Java Executable section) to select MORE OPTIONS (check the screenshot below) and then click Browse
• Go to Java installation folder. The default folder is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1(version number)\bin
• Select java.exe file and then click Open. In case there’s some issue with Java application, you’ll see the file is named as javaw.exe. Change the filename to java.exe
• Click Save
• Restart Minecraft and check if Error Code 1 is fixed

Solution # 4 – Reinstall Java

In case the last solution didn’t work, give reinstalling Java a shot. Reinstalling Java is not difficult at all. And doing so ensures corrupted files will get removed.

Uninstall the Java version installed on your computer using Programs and Features.

• Type control panel in the Search bar in the taskbar and hit Enter
• Select Small icons in the View by drop-down menu and then click Programs and Features
• Locate the Java version, right-click it, and select Uninstall
• Wait for the uninstallation to complete

Now, open a web browser window, navigate to the official Java website, and then download the latest version for your operating system. Once download is complete, install the software.

Solution # 5 – Change Minecraft Launcher path

If none of the solutions have worked for you, try changing Minecraft Launcher path. Here’s what you need to do:

• Right-click Minecraft Launcher icon and select Properties
• Look at the Shortcut section. At the end of Target field add this: “–workDir %ProgramData%.minecraft“
• Click the Apply button and then click OK
