What is Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
The Standard VGA Graphics Adapter refers to display hardware on your computer. Some video cards are listed in the Device Manager as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
If your Windows system displays Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in Device Manager, it generally means your system is not recognizing the installed Graphics Card and its Drivers, and the system is running on standard Display Drivers. Although it may not seem to be a problem, you will not be able to enjoy things such as Aero themes or play 3D games until you perform a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update.
Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in Device Manager
If you find a yellow exclamation by the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter entry under Display Adapter in your Device Manager, it generally indicates that a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update is needed.
How to perform a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update:
- Click on Start -> Control Panel -> System
- Go to Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
- Under Display Adapter, double click on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter to views its Properties
- Click on Details tab and search for the Hardware IDS for the Graphics Card in the given list
The Hardware IDs have Vendor and Device IDs. You need to copy and paste the Hardware IDS in the search bar of the browser to find the exact name of the Driver for the device. Alternatively, you can run a Graphics Drivers Scan to get exact details on the missing Drivers.
Once you have downloaded the required Driver, install it and your system will recognize your Graphics Card after a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update.
Fix Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Error 10
The system does not show any error message openly when you are required to perform a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update. You can see the error message when you view the properties of the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in Device Manager. The error is usually caused because Windows cannot find the required Drivers for the Graphics Card.
Running Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update and installing the latest Drivers for the Graphics Card will resolve this issue. Alternatively, you can also uninstall the Drivers of Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and then click on Scan for hardware changes in Display Adapter. When you follow this procedure, the system will prompt you to specify a location for the Graphics Card Drivers.
Standard VGA Graphics Adapter update is necessary to enjoy advanced graphics effects such as 3D image rendering. Your system will not use the installed Graphics Card until you perform a standard VGA Graphics Adapter update which involves installing the correct Device Drivers which can take advantage of all the functionalities of the Graphics Card installed in your system.

When I install nvidia driver on my laptop, GeForce GT 240M is shown under display adapters of device manager in windows 7. Otherwise, standard vga graphics adapter is shown. Does this mean that the computer is configured to use integrated graphics instead of dedicated graphics card when I don’t install nvidia driver? Or does it mean that the computer is configured to use nvidia graphic card, but with some standard driver instead of nvidia proprietary driver?
DriversExpert says
You should be able to choose either Driver via the Device Manager, if you do not have the nvidia driver then the system would use the default graphics driver – are you having problems selecting the nvidia one?
abhinay says
Hi
Thanks for responding. My actual problem is that my laptop(lenovo ideapad y550) graphic card(nvidia) failed and needs reballing. So I wondered whether it could be bypassed on the motherboard and use integrated graphics instead. But, after searching online yesterday, I realised that my processor (core 2 duo) does not have integrated graphics. Does this mean that in my laptop, graphic card is the only chip that can handle graphics and there are two drivers one can choose from- one standard and one nvidia proprietary. Till yesterday, I thought that standard vga graphics adapter is a driver that can only configure integrated graphics and has nothing to do with nvidia card. Now it seems that the standard driver can also be used to configure nvidia card. Am I correct? I am not given two options in device manager – if i install nvidia driver, geforce gt 240m appears, otherwise standard vga graphics adapter appears.
driverhelper says
I would take a backup of Drivers etc. and then uninstall everything relating to your NVIDIA card (if it needs reballing it is currently of no use anyway). This will force your system to use any backup integrated graphics if available – hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Hey guys – been having problem booting up laptop…it gets to desktop home screen (win7 HE) then everything hangs….uninstalled the intel display adapter and it boots fine with the standard vga graphs. However, the display obviously isnt as good as before. The standard driver is dated 2006 – is there an updated vga graphs driver that will allow diff screen resolutions to get it close to normal again.
(Ive tried to reinstall and update the intel drivers, but the above problem keeps reoccurring…im assuming the graphics card is cactus!)
DriversExpert says
Hi Gordo – what are the specs of your laptop? There should be an update available but would need more details on the model etc.

Thuan says
hey, i hope i can get a response for my issue. i downloaded your driver downloader link but i need a licensing’s key to actually use it… you never mentioned i would have to purchase anything? is there a way you could tell me the licenses key? also, i do have a standard vga graphics card, and when i open up the device manager it still says standard vga graphics card, but without any warning signs telling me its outdated. i have tried searching for new ones but it tells me i have the latest vga standard graphics card best suited for my device, even though it was from 2006. i would extremely appreciate any your assistance, thanks.
DriversExpert says
Hi Thuan – the Drivers Scan is free and you can get the Drivers details from this report. If you want the automatic updates then you do need to register (there is a fee), does the Drivers Scan show outdated Graphics Drivers or what is telling you that the graphics card is suited to your device?

My laptop runs standard vga graphics adapter.I updated but I got BSOD ( blue screen of death) my AMD is causing it. How will I fix it?
DriversExpert says
Hi Chekwa – where did you get the update from? What OS are you using? The best option is probably to start Windows using ‘Last Known Good Configuration’ from the ‘Advanced Boot Options’ menu. If you need more help on this just give us your OS details etc.

Laptop – ASUS G72GX, Windows 7 (64), Nvidia GTX260M 1gb, 6gb physical memory.
Problem – Laptop was randomly shutting down. No blue screen, just poof…off. When restarting it, sometimes it would restart right away, other times I would go make a cup of coffee and wait for it. I tested my power block and found that the voltages were fluctuating drastically. I replaced the power adapter, and all seemed fine for one night, then it started again. I noticed on Speccy that the temp of my GPU right after powering on was at 80C. Yea, i know…however it wasn’t accurate with the bios HW monitor, which was 12deg cooler. Anyhow, I decided to remove any and all traces of my video card driver, so some windows updating, run some system maintenance, etc…I fell asleep and when I awoke the following morning, found that my laptop was still running, and had no incidents. (running on the standard vga driver) I used drive sweep to remove any traces of video drivers in safe mode and updated to the latest nvidia driver, from the nvidia site. As soon as windows started, boom…immediate shut down. So i have spent the last day and night systematically running thru every driver available for my card, using drive swweper in safe mode etc…, all with the same results. System shutdown. Loaded the standard vga driver, and it ran without a hitch for an entire day. On top of all of this, I have removed everything from my case, cleaned, and put new paste where applicable. I had my mobo tested and everything was fine. So I am assuming that I should be shopping for a new video card, as I am at a dead end.
I should note that this is what is happening when it shuts down:
[ Name] Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
[ Guid] {331C3B3A-2005-44C2-AC5E-77220C37D6B4}
EventID 41
Thanks in advance.

.I updated but I got BSOD ( blue screen of death) =(
my os is 32 bit , window seven
DriversExpert says
Freakzilla – sounds like you have tried a lot here! How is the battery life? Do you run it mostly on the power adapter?
DriversExpert says
Hi Steve – what did you Update? OS or graphics?
Freakzilla says
The battery is shot, or has very little life left in it. I have recently taken the battery out and run off A/C. I have since installed and ran several other hardware monitoring programs and managed to get a gpu temp before it shut down (with the video card driver loaded, not the standard vga driver). All of the indicators are showing a gpu temp of 83C average, which is flaming hot for a idle card. I am just wondering how long I can run in this VGA mode before it finally dies for good. Thanks

My Dell Latitude E6430(mid 2012) is acting funny. I updated the standarad VGA graphics adapter driver and run the Solitaire card game, and it says i need to update my video card and enable hardware acceleration. So I updated Standard vga driver until it was the latest version and still having the same problem.
What should I do. And I think its suppose to be running on Intel core i7 processor.
