Reporting unfit drivers

A study of more than 1,600 Canadian drivers who had been injured in traffic crashes showed that 37% had physical conditions that could have affected their ability to drive.

In 7 of Canada's 10 provinces doctors are legally obliged to report such conditions to transportation authorities. However, researchers conducting the study found that most were not actually doing it. Only 3% of the injured drivers were actually reported.

"One-third of drivers involved in serious crashes were suffering from a chronic medical condition that contributed to the crashes," according to Donald Redelmeier, a senior scientist with the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences in Toronto and one of the researchers who conducted the study.

"The extent of this under-reporting is really remarkable,” Dr. Redelmeier said. Almost all of the crash-injured drivers had seen a doctor in the previous year but almost none of the driver-impairing conditions had been reported. End of Article
