Bermuda cab drivers still fighting GPS

Problems with taxi availability prompted the Bermuda government to make installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) transmitters mandatory in taxis in 2005. However, by mid 2006 it was estimated that not much more than half the taxis were using the GPS as required for dispatching. This amplified government suspicions that taxi drivers were engaging in other work such as tours and private transportation. Sometimes cruise ships were met with only one or two taxis.
Apparently many cabbies are not switching the GPS on because they don't want to be tracked or called on. One cab company recently had its license suspended for not complying with the GPS law.![]()
