Simulators to help Scottish truck drivers go green

By March 2006, 700 Scottish road haul truckers will have been trained by hi-tech simulator. The government expects this to save fuel and reduce crashes.
The training program, which is being sponsored by a partnership between the Scottish government, the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association, is using two simulators. One is a mobile unit, the first of its kind in the UK.
The aim is to help reduce fuel consumption by training drivers to use more economical as well as safer methods of driving. Funding for the project comes from the Scottish Road Haulage Modernization Fund, which has over 11 million pounds sterling available to spend on driver training programs by 2007.
The scheme is free to drivers in Scotland until 31 March 2007.
Based on results achieved elsewhere, drivers could achieve an average miles per gallon improvement of 10% and nearly 40% gear change reductions.
