While the conventional wisdom is that older drivers represent a substantial threat to other drivers, the truth of the matter may be that they represent a bigger threat to themselves. A new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found drivers over the age of 65 are almost twice (1.78 times) as likely to die in car crashes as drivers age 55 to 64.
Sadly, as drivers age things rapidly go from bad to worse. The report also revealed that drivers over 75 were over two-and-a-half times (2.59) as likely to die in a car crash and drivers over 85 were almost four times (3.72) as likely to die when compared to drivers aged 55 to 64. As if you didn't know it before, bad things happen to drivers when they age. When drivers get older, the likelihood of death or injury in car crashes increases, as does the likelihood that an older driver will be involved in a left-turn crash, be affected by illness or suffer from lapses in perception that could contribute to a crash. About the only thing older drivers seem destined to avoid is a bad case of acne, which affects the other big crash-injury group, teens and young adults.
"As we age, our reaction time and other cognitive skills can diminish," said Peter Kissinger, President of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. "For instance, our eyesight deteriorates to such an extent that by age 60 we require 10 times the amount of light necessary to see an object as when we were 16."
These statistics culled from the Texas Transportation Institute study for the AAA Foundation are all the more troubling since the population of seniors is increasing substantially. By 2030 one in five Americans will be 65 or older.
"Second only to teen drivers, older drivers are the second most likely group to sustain injuries or death in traffic crashes," said Kissinger. "It is vital that seniors periodically and honestly review their driving performance."

I am a 10th grade student in California and i have to do a report on driving ages. I decided to do how old u should be to stop driving. From all of the websites i looked at they are saying that if your over 75 or so you should have some type of apporved thing on your license. I so agree with this. Not being mean to my elders but i have to amit when i was driving with my grandma she was diging in her purse and she went straight through a red light, not relising she did, but she kept searching in her purse. I am not saying that all older people are irresponsible thats why i think that the driving test is fair so they can prove they are still able to drive a veicle. Those are my thoughts on these surcomstances.

As an older driver, I can vouch for one thing. My auto has a magnet in the the back bumper and some other drivers are sure impatient. Slow down!

As a relatively new driver relatively older than most new drivers, i agree it wouldn't be a bad idea for all drivers to have to re-take the driving test periodically. Too often i have seen people whoses (lack of) driving skills makes me wonder how they got a license in the first place.

I was searching for a driver for a computer when I just happened to read the comment from a tenth grader named Bella in California about agreeing with older people having to be retested to continue driving after a certain age. While I'm not totally against this in certain aspects,I also believe that perhaps our young people should be tested on their grammer and spelling. I've almost been killed by young drivers text messaging or talking on their cell phones while driving. I would be willing to bet that your grandmother who can't drive while searching through her purse can spell better than a tenth grader who spells more like a third grader.

Now this is scary,most of the comments above are from people looking for computer drivers nothing to do with this web site,if these people are out on the highway driving we realy have a problem no matter what age they are,but back to elderly drivers,I agree that a lot of older drivers are bad but they were probably bad drivers when they were younger,a good driver is a good driver no matter what age infact the older drivers have learned alot over the years,also remember todays 65 is yesterdays 45.I am a retired professional driver and at 67 with all my 50 years of experience I am a far better driver today than I was in my 30 & 40s,I no longer take chances and I drive expecting people to do the unexpected,I just gave up my CDL and I don't have to renew my licence till I am 73,if I need to take a test so be it,the day I feel I am not in full control of my vehicle is the day I quit driving,but to be honest I don't relish the thought of riding in a car with most of the people I see driving out there.

my dad is 88 i just bought a new car that he took out for a spin and had an accident the car is only 1 month old.
besides that I dont really care about the damage to the car i care that he might kill himself or someone else.I dont think i can live with that, but he is a stubborn old man and wont listen. I cannot take his car keys away because he will make my life a living hell. If my mother was alive today she would see to it that he did not drive... I dont know what i can do.. It is very hard. This is his 3rd accident. I think that when we reach a ceritain age our licenses should be taken away. I can take him anywhere he wants to go but he wants to drive and go out every day.. not anywhere special just out!! hes driving me crazy literally....
