London, England's Mayor Ken Livingstone has confirmed that drivers are to
be charged £5 (US$7) per day to drive into central London on weekdays.
Starting in February, 2003, the controversial congestion pricing scheme is
designed to ease the serious traffic problems facing the city, and will raise
up to £150 million a year for public transit and other transportation
needs. According to the story on Ananova ,
motorists will be charged if they want to enter a central zone between 7am
to 6.30pm on Monday to Friday. Approximately 230 cameras will be installed
to take pictures of licence plates to check whether the daily fee has been
paid. ![]()
