New Jersey Transit chips in Driver Ed

Worried about teen driver inexperience near railroads and buses, the New Jersey Transit System has developed two class periods of multimedia instructional material which will are being distributed to public, private and charter schools throughout the state.

Lesson plans for the modules were developed in partnership with Operation Lifesaver and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and approved by the state Department of Education.

The instructional materials for the lessons include Powerpoint and DVD formats and cover rail and bus-related topics such as stopping near tracks, dealing with crossing gates, and grade crossing tactics. They also cover laws requiring drivers to yield to transit buses that are re-entering the flow of traffic after making a stop.

The lessons were piloted last year at eight high schools, where teachers, administrators and students provided feedback.
